The catastrophic flood of 26 December 2004 in Southeast Asia affected the families of a number of Actebis logistics workers living on the northern and eastern coasts of Sri Lanka. Many lost everything and some relatives were killed by the floods.
Shortly after the tsunami disaster, Actebis and the Foundation Jürgen Wahn decided to build a new two-storey orphanage in Batticaloa on the eastern coast for orphans of both the civil war and the flood. The old orphanage was not large enough to house all the children.
Since the groundbreaking ceremony in June 2005, employees and business partners of the Actebis Group have collected 70,000 Euro in donations. Despite the resurgence of civil war, major procurement problems with construction materials and price increases, the building could be finished.
